Deteriorating moods

29-10-2009

The Consumer Confidence Index has worsened for the second month in a row. Over the past month the CCI has fallen by 2 points to 83. Poles are mainly pessimistic in their assessment of the current situation and prospects for its development. Poles still rate their own household situation much better than the situation of the entire economy in general.

Willingness to buy, describing consumers’ assessment of their own financial situation and inclination to purchase durables, fell by 2 points from the previous month’s level to 93 points. However, in certain groups growth was evident in the willingness to buy index – particularly among company owners and residents of medium-sized cities.

Ratings for the economic climate also fell by 2 points. Currently this index stands at a level of 68 points. According to data from October, 35% of Poles expect the country’s economic situation to worsen in the near future, while 14% expect an improvement, and the rest think there will be no change.

Compared to the beginning of the year there has been a distinct improvement in expectations linked to the situation on the job market. In February and March this year 64% of Poles expected unemployment figures to rise, while currently 45% have such expectations. However, only 8% believe the level of unemployment will fall.

Poles are not worried about rising prices, and on the contrary, quite a large portion of them (23%) expect inflation to fall.
