Consumer moods steadying

30-09-2009

Following the spring boost in consumer moods they have remained pretty steady at rather a low level since May this year - with pessimists continuing to dominate over optimists.

Over this period the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) has fluctuated between 79 and 87 points (a value of 100 points means there are equal numbers of optimists and pessimists).

In September the Consumer Confidence Index fell by 2.5 points from August's level to 85 points. This was a result above all of worsening ratings for the economic situation: the economic climate index fell by 5 points to 69 points, and applied equally to ratings for the situation as it has been and for the anticipated situation.
Consumers see the economic situation worsening in the situation on the job market; currently 50% of Poles expect the level of unemployment to rise in Poland over the coming 12 months, which is a rise of 5 percentage points on the previous month.

Economic pessimism is not yet reflected in assessment of households' financial situation; the size of the group of consumers short on money for living has not increased over the past month, while willingness to buy has only fallen by one point since August. One can clearly see that consumers continue to be less pessimistic about their own situation than they are about the country's economic condition.
