We observed a slight decline in the Polish consumer outlook in April. The growth recorded in the previous month has been halted, at least for the time being.

While the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) as measured by Ipsos finally made a decisive upwards move in March of this year (after a slide lasting several consecutive months), reaching the level of 77 points, the Index slipped back down to 75 points in April, to a level close to where it had been back in December 2011.

According to the April measurement taken by Ipsos, 22% of Poles (the same percentage as in the previous month) believe that our country’s affairs are heading in the right direction.

The downward trend in Polish consumer confidence, observed since November 2011, con-tinued over the past month. Although an uptick was noted in January in relation to the previous month, in February the Consumer Confidence Index as measured by Ipsos fell by 3.9 points (down to 73.3). The current Confidence Index has now tumbled all the way down to its April 2009 level, reaching one of its lowest readings in nearly three years.

All the component indices of the Ipsos Consumer Confidence Index contracted in February. The Economic Climate Index declined by 4 pts. month on month (down to 57.3), while the Current Index – which measures consumer assessment of the current situation in the national economy as well as in their own households – dropped by 4.4 pts (down to 60.9). Currently, 73% of Poles believe that our country’s affairs are heading in the wrong direction, which constitutes a 5% increase compared to the month before.

The New Year has changed little in Poland’s national mood. While the Ipsos Consumer Confidence Index increased somewhat, it’s still too soon to speak of any clear-cut reversal of the downward trend that began back in November 2011. The Index remains in the doldrums at 77 points, though it recorded a month-on-month change of +1 point.

The least growth was observed in the Economic Climate Index (+0.6 pts. in relation to the previous month). The Current Index – which measures consumer assessment of the current situation in the national economy as well as in their own households – gained 2 pts. (reaching the level of 65 pts.).

Ipsos in Poland, after merging with Synovate, has rebuilt its internal structure.
It reflects the organization of the entire Ipsos Group. The officers managing the merged company come from both of the original companies.

A new company structure has been established in the Polish Ipsos, which, after merging with Synovate, is now under the direction of Kurt Thompson. Currently, Ipsos in Poland consists of three main divisions: Ipsos Marketing , which provides research services supporting new product launches, product management and brand building strategy; Ipsos ASI, experts in advertising research; and Ipsos Loyalty, which concentrates on customer satisfaction and loyalty research.

The Christmas holidays did not improve the mood in Poland. The Ipsos Consumer Confidence Index (Polish acronym: WOK), which had tumbled in November, remained in the doldrums in December at 76 points.

While the month-on-month change was slight (-1 pt.), it is clear that the pessimistic mood has solidi-fied (the upward trend that had spanned half the year up to November, with a single slip in August, has collapsed). The current Consumer Confidence Index is now at its lowest level since April 2009.

Polish consumers definitely grew more pessimistic in November. The Consumer Confidence Index (Polish acronym: WOK) tumbled to 77 points. The month-on-month change was substantial, exceeding 11 pts.

The long-term growth trend that had spanned the previous half year (except for a slight slip in Au-gust), has currently been reversed. The WOK gave up all the gains it had made since March, when it bottomed out at its lowest level over the last two years. The collapse of the recent positive trend, to-gether with experts in the media predicting an economic slowdown and signals from the government about the necessity of taking cost-cutting measures could all contribute to further declines in consumer outlook in the near future.

Ipsos announces that it successfully completed yesterday the acquisition of the Synovate business for an enterprise value of £525 million*. Following this transaction, Ipsos becomes the third largest global market research company.

The acquisition was announced on 27 July 2011 and was conditional upon various approvals, which have been obtained since then: the transaction was approved by Aegis' ordinary shareholders on 16 August 2011 and obtained the mandatory anti-trust clearances thereafter.

The completion of the transaction occurs following the successful capital increase with preferential subscription rights of €200 million launched by Ipsos on 8 September 2011, to fund part of the acquisition price, and completed on 30 September 2011.
